Sustainable energy conserves natural resources.

ReFood produces electricity from food and kitchen waste for more than 46,000 households.

ReFood currently operates biogas plants at ten locations in Germany, France, and UK with output totalling around 20 megawatts.

Electricity from waste
Every year, ReFood enables more than 450,000 tonnes of food and kitchen waste to be processed in an eco-friendly way. 1 tonne of organic waste in a fermenter will produce around 150 cubic metres of biogas which is converted into around 350 kilowatt hours of electricity and 360 kilowatt hours of heat in downstream combined heat and power (CHP) plants. In this way, ReFood currently generates sustainable energy for more than 46,000 average-size households. Other biogas plants that recycle food waste are at the planning stage.

Heat as an additional energy source
We use the heat that arises during the conversion process at our plants in internal processes such as making food waste hygienic by heating it to above 70 degree Celsius for a period of one hour as standard. We also utilise heat from our CHP plants when cleaning containers and vehicles and to heat administration and staff welfare buildings. To make optimal use of thermal energy, ReFood is also developing new heating concepts for external operations.
