Turning yesterday’s food waste into tomorrow’s energy.

From food production to restaurants and the catering trade, hotels or retail, many sectors create food and kitchen waste that needs to be disposed of safely and hygienically. ReFood collects this organic material at local level and pretreats it so that it can be processed. The company can guarantee complete traceability and therefore provide maximum assurance that food waste is being disposed of properly. In this way, ReFood enables sustainable, beneficial use to be made of food and kitchen waste, used cooking oil, waste frying fats and surplus food, year after year. A range of carefully coordinated treatment processes generate high-quality fertilisers, environmentally friendly energy such as electricity and heat from combined heat and power plants, and material required to produce high-quality biodiesel.

Renewable energy in the form of electricity and heat

ReFood operates biogas plants at locations in Germany, France and UK with output totalling around 20 megawatts (MW). These facilities generate sustainable electricity and heat for over 46,000 households. Other plants in Germany, France and Poland are at the planning stage. The fermentation product from biogas plants is also used in agriculture as a high-quality NPK fertiliser that is both sustainable and cost-effective. Read more about ReFood and energy

Processing used cooking oil

Can frying fats be used as the basis of fuel? They certainly can. Here too, valuable raw materials can be extracted from waste. ReFood processes waste cooking oil collected in special containers from the restaurant and catering trade and food producers to create intermediate products that the biodiesel industry can use to make biofuels with an exceptionally low CO2 level. Customers rely on this service: ReFood recycling of used fats and oils.
